Jair Bolsonaro detained after being considered a escape threat

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
