The World Are Invited to Become the Fourth Haim Sisters Bandmate.

"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: I also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous supporters have also coveted the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy contenders.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their music videos often show them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to start a band."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The trio have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international following.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
